So You Want to Hunt a Digger
So You Want to Hunt a Digger
Greetings brave adventurer, you’re here because you want to hunt the legendary diggers, the vermin of the underdark. Most likely you need to hunt one of these for Master Breytak in the mithril weapons training hall as a requirement for one of your mithril ring upgrades. Or maybe you just like a challenge and want to test your mettle against one of the toughest bugs around. Either way you’re in for a challenge!
Finding the Diggers
Diggers are vile scavengers that live in total darkness, slowly expanding their twisting labyrinth of tunnels. They can be found in the deep dark through the smokey caverns (don’t get petrified) and past the Alpha mithril pillar. There is a sign here that tells you the digger tunnels are to the east. Follow the east path and enter the digger tunnels but first make sure you are ready for a fight. The tunnels themselves aren’t too expansive, but make sure you remember where you came in as it is not clearly marked in on the map. I counted about 16 diggers total in the area and they are almost always found one at a time.
I will mention that, as part of the mithril ring quest line you will have to fight a tamed digger that is very tough. This book will not cover that fight as other adventurers have already spoken on this topic. See “Quest for the Mithril Master Ring” by zack4994kcaz, I found his book to be very helpful.
Fighting a Digger
Diggers have very high elemental resistances, they are hard to hit, they hit hard and often, and they have a ton of life. They are also immune to critical hits, death magic and mind spells and are constantly regenerating. As a fighter I can’t speak much to the magical resistance of these creatures but everything I tried to cast on them For those of you more interested in the stats breakdown for these suckers here is the information I have been able to glean in my research.
HP: Aprox. 9000 (difficult to tell with their regeneration)
AC: 60 (casting darkness on them makes them easier to hit)
AB: 95/90/85
Damage: Consistently hitting for 100-160 physical
resistances: -50/+10 physical damage reduction, -75% to all elemental damage
Reflex saves: +66
Magic Res: Unknown, but every spell I (as a fighter with the odd magic device) attempted to use against them was resisted (excluding greater ruin). From what I have heard they are almost immune to magic so casters beware.
Rewards
Unfortunately, the rewards for killing a digger are rather meager. They don’t grant Epic Xp, at least not to a lvl 40 character. They drop no money or loot other than their eggs, but lets be honest, that’s what you’re here for anyway. I cleared out the digger tunnels and was rewarded with exactly one digger egg so either the drop rate is bad or my luck is. Plan on killing quite a few of the buggers to get your egg. The eggs do sell pretty well, around 20k, but with the drop rate being as low as it is there are dozens of better places to get gold.
As always good luck and may this help you in your quest to defeat the Elderkind!
