The Golem Fortress
Deep in the Gathol Labryinth lies 6.02x10**23 an area infested with Golems, and in the NW corner of this area is a large room full of Golems. Note that if you can't go thru these Golems like a hot knife thru butter, then going further is not for you, In the western corner of the north wall is a doorway to the deep places. Follow the path down 2 levels to the door to the courtyard of the Golem Fortress. Buff before going thru the door as Golems may be close on the other side.
The courtyard is divided into 4 large rectangular areas and 4 smaller corner areas. Each rectangular area is guarded by 4 Sentry golems, and each corner area by 2 sentry golems and a war golem. The Sentry golems are like a test, and drop nothing. You must be able to kill them quite easily or the War golems will cream you. The War golems hit hard and quickly and have a lightning breath weapon. They also dispel magic on hit, so prepare to be stripped of your spell defences rather quickly. A War golem drops 7500GP and about 25% of the time a Crackling Power Core, which has various quest and weapon uses. You need to pass thru at least 2 rectangular areas and 2 corner areas to get to the Fortress entrance proper.
Entering the Fortress proper, you will find yourself in an outer corridor where you will be mobbed by 4 War golems. A tactical note here, the golems will go for your pet, but can only face him one at a time in this corridor. You can try standing behind him and Healing him every couple of rounds with a Greater Wish until he wins thru, or if you go for them yourself, they will kill him very quickly. You must face 3 of these mobs before reaching the doorway to the inner area of the Fortress.
The inner area of the Fortress is a very large rectangular area. You enter from the east and lurking near the entrance are 3 War golems. To the left of the entrance is an alcove with a floating container. This contains a Horizon Walker helm. There are various pedestals and structures around the periphery that are guarded by Sentry golems and War golems. It is probably best to clear these out or risk being mobbed at the centre. The centre structure is guarded by 4 Advanced War golems. If you are quick and hold the entrance you can face them one at a time. In the dead centre of the Fortress is another floating container containing a Horizon Walker armour. Against the west wall of the Fortress is a tower with stairs leading up to the Wizards Lair.
As soon as you enter the wizard's lair you will be attacked by 2 Advanced War golems and the Mad Wizard himself. It's important to get close to the wizard quickly because he uses Bigsby's hand spells, and if you are not close you can't hit him. The wizard buffs himself up to high heaven and casts spells and hits you while you are held. This becomes an attritional grind and you need many heals. Keep at him until he runs out of spells then you can kill him as his protections fade. Disappointingly after such a battle, the wizard only droped a Staff of the Magi and an Elevator key which you can use as a shortcut back to the deep places.

I paid a good few return visits to the Mad Wizard, and one day I finally caught him with his "Golem Construction Plans" in his hand, which he dropped when killed. From these and a Crackling Power Core, I was able (once a day) to construct my own Golem who would obey me. His stats are as follows:

Sometime later I spoke with Crom in the Mithrilfin Crafter's guild and discussed upgrading the summoned Golem. He presented me with a list of artifacts to collect to achieve this.
1 x Massive Power Core
12 x Tempest in a bottle.
1 x Drow Longsword.
1 x Bee Mans Honey Batch 4
1 x Life Saver
1 x Hint of Lightning
1 x Bar of Adamantine
1 x Payment from my Mithril count of 200
When these items were collected and given to Crom, he set in motion a process which upgraded the Golem to the following stats.
